Abstract

SILVA, Santuza Amorim da  and  FREITAS, Daniela Amaral Silva. Representations of the Afro-Brazilians in children’s and teenage literature. Educ. Puc. [online]. 2016, vol.21, n.3, pp.311-322. ISSN 2318-0870.  https://doi.org/10.5965/151939932112016311.

After the enactment of Law 10.639/03, the teaching of Afro-Brazilian history and culture became mandatory in Brazilian public and private elementary and high schools. Consequently, the development of a series of actions in the political and educational scenario can be found. One of these actions has been accomplished by Belo Horizonte City Hall that consists of production and distribution of children’s and teenage literature books to all the schools in the municipal network that focus on the ethnic and racial theme: Afro-Brazilian literature kits. Based on the studies on the theme, and using qualitative studies, the aim of present study was to investigate the Afro-Brazilian representations disclosed in these materials. The argument developed in this study is that these books contribute and strengthen the ethnic and racial identities by discussing and valuing the image, culture and the way of living of the Afro-Brazilian population.
