Abstract

COITINHO, Denis. Virtues and Democracy. Conjectura: filos. e Educ. [online]. 2018, vol.23, n.spe3, pp.90-116.  Epub Sep 02, 2019. ISSN 2178-4612.  https://doi.org/10.18226/21784612.v23.dossie.5.

The main aim of this paper is to reflect on the importance of the connection between private and public virtues in a coherent way for the guarantee of both psychological and social stability, aiming at strengthening of democracy. To this end, I investigate the role of the public virtues of reasonableness and tolerance. Subsequently, I discuss the importance of collective identity and common intentionality to deal with moral and political complexity, as well as emphasizing the intersubjective characteristic of moral knowledge. The next step is to investigate the relevance of the private virtues of integrity and autonomy. I conclude the text by advocating the advantage of using a liberal- communitarian theory that can coherently connect private and public virtues as a way of identifying more clearly what would be our common obligations.

Keywords : Virtues; Democracy; Collective identity; Knowledge.
