In this article we use the perspective of Norbert Elias’s sociology and Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis to analyze the construction of the self in life stories narratives. We, first, present how the self is built as viewed by Norbert Elias after Freud and then, we discuss how the construction of a life story narrative can be understood as one strong strategy for creating the idea of the self. Our analysis take on some concepts from oral history and we based it on 2 life stories of the archive of the Museu da Pessoa. We compare how individuals of different cultural and social background have different understanding of their selves, though both of them have a self-concept present in their narratives.
