Abstract

ROCHA, Helena do Socorro Campos da; VAZ, Cristina Lúcia Dias  and  MENDES, Iran Abreu. Black female ancestrality and starting points for possible futures in mathematics. e-Curriculum [online]. 2024, vol.22, e59841.  Epub Jan 31, 2025. ISSN 1809-3876.  https://doi.org/10.23925/1809-3876.2024v22e59841.

The research aimed to investigate the existence of reports of the presence of black women and their contribution to Mathematical Science. It starts with the following question: Are there reports of the presence of black women mathematicians and their contribution to Mathematical Science in specialized journals? If so, how does Afrofuturism contribute to the analysis of this presence? A documental research was carried out in Portal Periódicos Capes, from the enactment of Law 10.639/2003. The analysis took place in the light of Afrofuturism through the categories ancestry, empowerment, respect for differences and possible future. Thirteen articles were found and two of them bring an explicit racial focus that help to understand the effects caused by the presence of black women in Mathematics linked to the representation that enables empowerment in the rescue of ancestry. This allows us to detect signs of a possible future with the growing presence of black women in mathematics.

Keywords : female ancestry; afrofuturism; black women; black maths; possible future.
