Abstract

GONZALEZ, Juan; GAVILANES, Ricardo  and  LASTRA, Alonso. Privatization of School Aid in Chile: how does it affect its public character?. Fineduca [online]. 2024, vol.14, 138048.  Epub May 06, 2025. ISSN 2236-5907.  https://doi.org/10.22491/2236-5907138048.

This article describes and analyzes the privatization process of the school aid system in Chile, particularly the feeding program. To provide context, it reviews its historical background as a public system, identifying the social actors involved in the debate on the meaning of school aid as a social assistance policy. An analytical description of the service privatization process will then be made, highlighting the most relevant milestones and their results. To this end, a set of primary and secondary research sources were reviewed, complemented with interviews with workers who went through the service privatization process at the institution. It reflects on the impact on public services of public-private alliances or the so-called New Public Management, considering the contribution that public-community alliances that emerge as an alternative in the history of the public system can make to this issue.
