The debate on the contradictions involving adult education in Brasil must overcome the usual terms of discussion which disregard ideological difficulties. From the identification of two ever-contending models - a "schooling" or "systematizing" model and a "popular" or consciousness-raising one - it is possible to transcend those analyses whichso often confound criticism with ideological stigmatizing. Present situation can thus be properly assessed, as well as the ideological mechanisms used in the attempts to reconcile both models, especially those undergone within Fundação Educar (Brazilian government's foundation for adult education), through an analysis based on available official documents
