This article presents some discussions brought forward in a research carried out in the field of cultural theory, mainly from the perspective of both Feminist Studies and Cultural Studies, in approaches which have proposed a critical approximation to Post-Structuralism. I have examined how some discourses of Programa Nacional Bolsa-Escola articulate assumptions of Developmental Psychology to cal! for women as mothers, thus representing them as the most suitable individuals to exercise functions so as to foster social inclusion. That is the reason why they have also been the target of a number of specific attributions and prescriptions which could be translated into hegemonic forms of care, protection, home management and children education. In that context, such hegemonic forms may be presented as being appropriate for or pertaining to the exercise of maternity.
