This research note seeks to demonstrate the role of race in explaining differences in performance, measured by the proficiency of public school students in the state of Espírito Santo. It is not intended to determine the mechanisms that operate in maitaining this inequality, but aims to emphasize that race is an important dimension in understanding educational differences, being responsible for wide variations in proficiency and therefore should be taken into account in attempts to explain these variations.
