The present study aimed to monitor the implementation of Goal 7 of the Plano Nacional de Educação [National Education Plan] in Brazil by analyzing documents relating to basic education and data from the Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio [National High School Exam] from 2014 to 2022. The results reveal disparities in student performance related to gender, color/race, type of school and region. The historical context of exclusion of black and indigenous people, the idea that women shouldn’t be in the field of exact sciences and access to schools for people with disabilities are some of the possible justifications. The conclusion is that significant challenges remain if effective and equal science education is to take place in the country.
