In this paper the results of the Programa de Promoção da Fluência em Leitura (PPFL) - Reading Fluency Improvement Program will be analysed. This program was implemented with 74 students from the second grade of a primary school in the north of Portugal. The PPFL is composed by 22 didactic sequences, constructed from 22 texts (9 narrative, 4 informative and 9 poems). Each sequence was implemented through sessions of 10 to 15 minutes, during 22 weeks, in five days cycles (from Thursday to Wednesday). Each week (cycle) we worked with only one didactic sequence (i.e. one text). The study uses a quasi experimental design, with a control group and an experimental group, with a pretest and a posttest. The participants were assessed with the Teste de Fluência em Leitura (TFL) - Reading Fluency Test, considering the variables speed and accuracy. The results show significant differences for the experimental group results in the posttest, indicating the effectiveness of the PPFL. The experimental group exceeded the initial differences in the pretest and showed, in the posttest, a slight superiority compared to the control group. The qualitative analysis of the PPFL impact suggests an increase in the reading motivation, in the family involvement and changes in teachers' educational practices.
