STREDA, Carina y VASQUES, Carla Karnoppi. Down Syndrome and Intellectual Disability: History and Logic of an Association. Rev. bras. educ. espec. [online]. 2022, vol.28, e0085. Epub 09-Nov-2022. ISSN 1980-5470. https://doi.org/10.1590/1980-54702022v28e0085.
The main problem discussed in this article is the direct association between Down Syndrome and intellectual disability. This is a theoretical study presented as an essay, with the aim to refute the belief and generalization around restricted learning for people with Down Syndrome, from the understanding of the conditions of production of the scientific and cultural statements that sustain this association since the 19th century. It is argued that this certainty can be interpreted by a problematic syllogistic reasoning that contains a deterministic and essentialist idea, which centers on the biological or genetic aspect the possibilities of being in the world.
