The article presents the development of the institutional evaluation, briefly touched on its Brazilian implementation history, also emphasizing the integration category and its importance in the achievement of global comprehension about the evaluation's subject. In this case, the integration is an effort to understand the totality, through the several dimensions of the university. Given the changing characteristic of the evaluation, the text sustains that the institutional evaluation can cooperate to bring the integration to where it doesn't exist. This process of comprehension, transformation and construction is permanent and unaccomplished, like the institutional evaluation should be.
