The present text focus on the discussion of University Social Responsibility (USR). Considering the influence of historical facts in the constitution of the concept, the study is based on a bibliographic research with historical nature. The discussion contemplates the composition of the concept throughout the trajectory of the university, the institutional facts and the legal basis in the Brazilian case. The multiple definitions of social responsibility present in academic studies and the complexity involved in the adoption of the concept within university organizations are also addressed. As contributions, the study presents the contextualized systematization of ideas about RSU, considering the facts related to the constitution of the concept, and that the theme represents an advance in the forms of control and measurement of university management. The conclusions of the study point to the multidisciplinarity of the theme and the fact that the implementation of actions goes beyond specific attributions of the group responsible for the management of this organizational type.
