NASCIMENTO, Thiago Rodrigues. The first Symposium of Higher Education History Teachers (1961): curriculum and teacher training. Cad. Hist. Educ. [online]. 2017, vol.16, n.1, pp.286-304. ISSN 1982-7806. https://doi.org/10.14393/che-V16n1-2017-17.
The teaching of History in Brazil and its history as a school subject finds a consolidated place in the educational literature and historiography. However, the attention given to its establishment in universities, whose focus lies in the institutionalization process of History courses in the 1930s and 1940s, is recent. The years leading up to the civil-military coup of 1964 are characterized by extensive discussions regarding the necessary changes in the then current courses. We looked at the place reserved for teacher education in the discussions at the First University Education History Teachers Symposium (1961) and the configuration of History courses in the first half of the 1960s. The analysis of the proceedings can observe that a series of political and historiographical disputes characterized the First Symposium and the history courses were in the process of discussion of different models of training.
