This article discusses the teaching of music and school songs in Montes Claros and in the region of the north of Minas Gerais giving visibility to the official discourses and regulations, to the appropriations and practices produced by teachers in primary and regular courses. During the investigated period, school songs and music teaching are associated with the efforts of the school to educate the new generations and produce the new citizen immersed in the civilized environment which shares a new sociability and is able to live in groups. A pragmatic and utilitarian approach to lyrics is also taken as a resource for the teaching of reading and interpretation.
