BIANCHINI, Paolo. Homeland, race and civilization. The instructions for a successful emigration in the italian Geography textbooks between the end of '800 and the beginning of the ‘900. Cad. Hist. Educ. [online]. 2019, vol.18, n.2, pp.309-328. Epub 26-Sep-2019. ISSN 1982-7806. https://doi.org/10.14393/che-v18n2-2019-3.
The essay aims to illustrate the ways in which emigration and colonization were presented and justified in Italian geography manuals in the decades between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. To this end, a series of schoolbooks in use in primary and secondary schools will be analysed. Very frequently, in fact, the issues of emigration and colonization were widely treated at school, both because emigration was at the time a mass phenomenon that affected almost all families and because Italy, recently unified, was constructing its international dimension by means of a campaign of territorial and cultural conquest extended far beyond the Mediterranean area to reach the countries beyond the Atlantic Ocean. The goal is to analyse the role of school and school publishing in the construction of some central concepts in the life of individuals, such as homeland, race and civilization, which still today are strongly affected by the images and the instructions transmitted in the past centuries.
