VARGAS, Hustana y TEIXEIRA, Eliana de Oliveira. Black childhood and elementary school in Angra dos Reis: an immersion in the numbers of "universalization". R. Educ. Públ. [online]. 2016, vol.25, n.60, pp.723-747. ISSN 2238-2097. https://doi.org/10.5965/01045962v25n602016723.
This article discusses educational itineraries of black and white students of Public Elementary School in Angra dos Reis-RJ. Quantitative data of race/color declaration taken from the School Census (from 2009 to 2013) were refined in order to build more specific educational indicators such as enrollment, school failure, age-grade gap and appropriateness to the educational system, signa ling persistent disadvantages for black students in all indicators slightly reduced at the end of the period. The findings, in dialogue with Guimarães (2003) Quijano (2005), Oliveira (2007) and Mu nanga (2010), puts into question the proclaimed elementary school universalization, suggesting the implementation of affirmative action in basic education and understanding that the realization of equality is anchored in childhood.
