Today, grandparents have played an important role in the family, especially concerning the care of grandchildren. In order to reveal a little bit of this universe, this article aims to discuss the role of grandparents who take care of grandchildren in the children’s schooling process. The investigation occurred in the city of Viçosa (Minas Gerais - Brazil), and we choose the qualitative methodological approach. The empirical research was based on conducting reflective interviews with four grandparents from popular backgrounds, who, due to many different circumstances, became the main ones responsible for their grandchildren. The results showed that the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren is permeated by affection, care, and complicity; however, there are also concerns, tiredness, tensions, and disappointments, especially concerning their children, who, in many cases, moved away from children from an early age. We concluded that the interviewed grandmothers maintain a close relationship with their grandchildren’s schools and, for educative practices in their schooling process, they count on friends and family solidarity.
