A probabilistic sample of pre-school children from Aracaju, Sergipe (1975) with 45 boys and 47 girls from 66 to 72 months old, was studied for: a) social and cultural conditions (father's occupation, family income, father and mother's years in school, parity, spacing, birth order and cultural opportunities at home); b) nutrition (weight and height); c) cognitive development (conservation, Piaget). Groups and frequency of children were compared as follow: (a) fathers occupation, non-manual (NM), 20, manual (M), 57, and intermediary (I), 15; (b) nutrition, normal (N), 47, current malnutrition (AM), 16, past malnutrition (PM), and current and past malnutrition (AMP), 8. Conservation was expressed by a score from 0 to 12. The results, according to occupational level, nutrition, number of children per group and conservation score, were: NM-N (10), 3.6; I-N (8), 5.9; M-N (29), 1.9; NM-PM (5), 0.5; M-PM (16), 0.0. The other groups were not included in the analysis. The interpretation is that both socio-cultural leveand past malnutrition affect conservation, and consequently, school performance. In the NM group, the nutritional status is influenced by parent's schooling, size of family, parity and birth spacing and order. In the M group, it is related to birth spacing. The conservation score was higher for children with 24 month spacing or more in all groups, except for the M-PM, in which it was zero for all children.
