The relationship between reflection/impulsivity (as assessed by Kagan's "Matching Familiar Figures Test") and academic achievement, was examined with 298 first grade children. Procedures to estimate validity and reliability were carried out. The main results indicate the existance of significant negative correlations between errors and latency.Reflective children, as compared to the impulsive ones, presented better academic achievement. Data concerning other response styles were included in an effort to gain better understanding of the factors that influence achievement. Alternative methods to classify subjects responses were also used and compared. The data have implications for understanding the nature of poor school performance. Also, the results suggest the need of optimal educational strategies for the development of reflexion in children.
