This article discuss the results of the administration of tests to 25 first grade students of a public school located in the outskirts of the city of Curitiba, in the beginning of the 1981 school year. According to Piaget, the three notions studied - conservation of numerical quantities, quantification of inclusion, and seriation - play an important role in the construction of the idea of number by the child and, consequently, are meaningful in the process of learning Mathematics. The results obtained indicate the existence of different situations of development for each notion, being the children unprepared for starting numerical calculations, according to piagetian theory.
