The aim of this article is to describe and analyze how students of an isolated rural school in Piauí (Northeast of Brazil) construct the alphabetical system of written representation. Based on the theoretical conceptions of Emilia Ferreiro, the procedures used were similar to those adopted by her. Results point to the fact that it takes the students a few years to reach the alphabetical level in writing. Reasons for such may be found not only in structural factors, but mainly in school dynamics itself. Emphasis is given to the difficulties felt by the unqualified teacher to promote literacy.
