The debate on the state's role in Brazilian education crosses through the country's republican history. By searching the genealogy of differing arguments on lay and gratuitous schooling, in the light of constitutions and educational laws, the paper analyzes the various discourses of advocacy for private schooling, pointing the main current trends therein.
