This reading presents a socio-historical view of play and forms of the theories and pre-school educational practices of the Western world of the panorama of the evolution of play. Based on the works of Brougère, Henriot, and Vygotsky, the author develops the idea that the merit attributed to play in the education of the young child is associated with a new image of the child. Since the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, this image has been building on the base of the child's social status. The author raises questions concerning some professional capabilities necessary to educational work in day centers and preschools.
