To discuss some of the features of the new educational policies suggested to Latin American countries, the article begins by describing a panorama from the point of view of the "optimists" and the "pessimists" of the profound political and structural changes in today's world. Registering the fact that, in such a context, international institutions have recommended policies for the privatization of education, the author delineates a quick history of the clash between advocates of privatization and defenders of public education in Brazil during the last decades. The article presents data from national level studies and the results of privatization carried out in Chile, to conclude that there is no solid empirical evidence to justify the adoption of privatization policies.
