This paper presents an analysis of evasion at Universidade Aberta do Brasil (UAB), having as one of its references the process of expansion of higher education at distance learning, initiated from the 1990s. The analysis of the available data in the Sistema Universidade Aberta do Brasil (SisUAB) and in Observatório da Vida do Estudante Universitário (OVEU/UFRN) resulted from the research that aimed at knowing the profile of dropouts students of Physics at UAB/Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). The central assumption of the analysis is that various factors determined the permanence and the evasion, which requires from competent authorities the recognition of the need to create mechanisms and more efficient and transparent monitoring criteria in order to favor the permanence.
