The purpose of this study is to investigate the experience of democracy and citizenship in school management and to problematize issues related to justice. The comparative study examined two schools in Recife (one public and one private), recognized as being democratic. It sought information about the concepts of justice and democratic organization. Data was collected through interviews, questionnaires and observations in which we analyze how rules are collectively constructed and how the concepts of participation, autonomy and citizenship are configured. Among the results, we highlight differences in the respect that students, parents and teachers have for school rules, which we related to the level of awareness resulting from participation in their preparation, and to the shared values in each environment. The concepts of justice denote references to their legal dimension. It was found that school organization mobilizes different principles of justice, which, however, contradicted the assumptions contemplated, such as a supposed emphasis on a mercantilist view of justice in the private school or a universalist perspective of justice in the public school.
