This theoretical article intends to reflect on the identity of Environmental Education in the gallery space of the natural history museum. For this purpose, it analyzes the educational and environmental dimension of expography in natural history and relationships are established with the field of Environmental Education. In that sense, it is possible to affirm about a potential incidence of the natural history museum in the Environmental Education of the visitors, from the XIX century with the introduction of didactic innovations in the exhibitions. On the other hand, it identifies the hegemony of a conservationist approach to Environmental Education. Finally, resistances are distinguished and proposals are suggested for the development of critical currents of Environmental Education in the gallery space.
