The present article describes the construction process of an instrument specifically developed to evaluate the teaching practice of higher education teachers. The instrument was created based on a theoretical model supported by recent literature on research on the effectiveness of teaching. After carrying out three pilot studies the instrument was applied in a higher education institution in Brasília to students in 654 classrooms and to 227 teachers. After the exclusion of cases that marked more than one possible alternative and cases with missing values, the resulting database contained 14,951 cases. Factor analysis of the data indicated the existence of two factors: “teacher-student relationship” (7 items, α = 0.96) and “teaching practice” (9 items, α = 0.97). The evaluation instrument proved to be a promising element in the process of improving the quality of teaching practice in the classroom.
