The article analyzes texts published in the journal Estudos em Avaliação Educacional, between 1990 and 2018, related to the theme of external evaluation. The main argument is that the journal has contributed significantly to the institutionalization of this debate in the Brazilian academic field, with reflections on concepts, designs, methodologies, and ways of implementing evaluations. A quantitative description of the articles published in this period is presented and categories of analysis are established a priori and a posteriori. As a result, the protagonism of Fundação Carlos Chagas on this theme is demonstrated; and ways of consolidating the debate on external evaluations in the Brazilian academic field, as well as knowledge gaps about the uses of external evaluations in schools and education networks, are identified.
