MENEGUELLI, Gisella y FERRE-PAVIA, Carme. Hate speech against Dilma Rousseff from a semio-linguistic perspective. Rev. Estud. Fem. [online]. 2024, vol.32, n.1, e87865. Epub 01-Ene-2024. ISSN 1806-9584. https://doi.org/10.1590/1806-9584-2024v32n187865.
This article shows the analysis of misogynist hate speech applied to the case of Dilma Rousseff in Brazil. The case of Veja magazine, the most widely read magazine in Brazil, during the term of office of the former president, is studied from the perspective of the semio-linguistic theory of discourse analysis. The character of what is denoted by the adjectives is analyzed from six opinion articles in the magazine before and after the 2014 presidential election. The overall hypothesis of the text is that the impeachment suffered by Rousseff in 2016, although not provoked by the fact that she was a woman, was characterized by gendered political violence, given that her social representation in the media did spread misogynistic images about women in Brazil. The characteristics of Veja’s linguistic behaviors in creating images about Rousseff fall into a propagation of gendered hate, or misogyny.
