This article deals with the conflict between two approaches to education in Brazil: multiculturalism and ethnocentrism. We maintain that ethnocentrism forges the homogenization of Brazil's multiple cultures and strengthens social inequality in which, victimizes Afro-Indian and mixed blood children from the popular classes and favors white children from middle and upper classes. We take the position that multicultural education reduces school failure of excluded ethnic children, improves the quality of teaching and promotes the citizen emancipation of popular classes.
