Using data from a research on teacher education the present paper tries to show the role of a reflective diary in the evolution of teaching practice and in the improvement of teacher's work. First the paper argues that evaluation can be used to diagnose learning difficulties and to make adjustments in order to improve classroom practices. Next the paper describes a process of in service teacher training in which the reflective diary was used to promote teacher's consciousness of evaluation conceptions and practices and to develop projects of changing classroom practices. In the last part the paper presents extracts of a teacher diary showing evolution in her evaluation conceptions and practices as well as extracts of teachers' diary illustrating its use with children in the improvement of evaluation and teaching.
