A research of books on the History of Education, published in Brazil, serves as a starting point for this article which examines some interpretative hypotheses regarding the characteristics that this material presents. The content of the books researched are structured on two axis: the organization of schools and pedagogical theories. The text is supported by biographies of other authors and data from studies in pointing out some of the possible origins of concepts identified in these books.
