lt is well known that children´s symbolic play prevails dunning lhe pre-operational period and that visual impaired children are capable of pretending, though after been taught. Visual impaired children less frequently than sighted children show pretend play spontaneously. In this study we observe and describe visual impaired preschoolers´ play wilh reference to cognitive aspects, in two contexts: spontaneous and proposed. Next, we ascertain the differences posed by lhe two contexts on the level of children´s play. Six visual impaired preschoolers enrolled in a Philantropic lnstitution of Porto Alegre were observed o playful activities which were coded according to McCune-Nicolich´s play classification. Results showed that 48.65% of frames in spontaneous context were syrnbolic, while in the proposed context 100% were of this type. Results indicate that, with appropriate stimulation, visual impaired children may reach a higher level of cognitive development.
