This paper discusses the drop-out rate of undergraduates studying in evening courses, taking as point of departure the case of chemistry students - classes of 1994/1998 at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). Comparisons were made with similar studies of programs offered during daytime, groups of 1990 to 1995. The drop-out rates of evening courses averaged 20%, were smaller than in daytime courses, and showed a tendency towards decline during timeframe studied. Similarly to what happens in daytime courses, the attrition at evening courses proved to bear relation with the student's work situation and by his family's income. The dropouts were interviewed, revealing that they identify the difficulties to conciliate between work and study as the main cause of attrition.
