This study investigated how mothers represent the six-year-old child entry in Elementary School, as well as how they represent the literacy in classes of six-year-old children, looking for the existence of a possible influence from them in teacher’s work in this matter. The study was developed through a qualitative approach, using observation, questionnaire, semi-structured interviews and field diary as instruments for data collection. The study was made with six mothers and five regent teachers of the 1st school year in two public schools in the city of Muriaé, in the state of Minas Gerais. The results indicated a tendency from the mothers to associate the current first school year to the old first grade, what leads, in many moments, to putting over the six-year-old child and the school work the same learning and development expectations deposited before in seven-year-old children.
