Abstract: Can the principles of classroom-based assessment be transferred to the online environment? This question forms the starting point for this article, which is the result of research that sought to analyze the learning assessment process used in an online course and at the same time transfer classroom-based assessment procedures to an environment involving online interfaces. The theoretical basis for the article covers the following topics: (a) the communication scenario in terms of the concept of cyberculture and (b) notions regarding assessment in a classroombased environment Lastly, the authors discuss the following results of the research: (a) the principles of classroom-based learning assessment can be transferred to the online environment; (b) forums and chat rooms allow technical and pedagogical mediation of assessment; and (c) assessment must take into account the technical and pedagogical possibilities and limitations for knowledge to be built.
