The aim of the research is to identify the challenges of the university teaching career pointed out by teacher trainers. The approach is qualitative and the data was collected through the means of a questionnaire with thirty-six (36) teachers who teach in undergraduate courses at a state university in Paraná. The discursive textual analysis was counted and the results show that the main challenges faced by the trainers are related to the students’ preparation for graduation; professional conditions and public policies. The research also showed that there are many contradictions regarding the role of higher education institutions and what they really play.
