Resumen

MUTABAZI, Eric. The Paradoxes of history teaching within a multiethnic nation. Rev. Diálogo Educ. [online]. 2018, vol.18, n.59, pp.1190-1221.  Epub 05-Feb-2020. ISSN 1981-416X.  https://doi.org/10.7213/1981-416x.18.059.ds10.

The teaching of history is one of the disciplines that allows students to know not only the past, but also to transmit the collective memory, to train the national spirit and to develop a common political awareness. However, in today’s world’s multicultural nations, producing a common national History seems an unachievable goal, if not unconceivable, since each ethnic group has its own past, its own culture and values which are not shared with other groups. In some nations, there is also a paradox between the idea of building a national community and the aims of the content of history teaching offered to students in schools. In this contribution, we will understand this paradox through the analysis of the content of education in Rwanda. Comparing the content of history textbooks used in schools before 1994 with the objectives of achieving national cohesion and unity among ethnic groups will illustrate this paradox.
