Our aim in this text is to review key features in content analysis in the perspective of Bardin, which can be comprehended as a pathway for the construction of critical review of the scientific production in the field of the humanities, more specifically systematic bibliographic review in the education area, since it is widely cited in Brazilian papers, frequently without a greater description of the implemented procedures. Aiming at contributing for the production of reviews we developed a demonstrative essay, in which we present the steps described by Bardin, as well as the concepts present in content analysis, illustrating them with examples obtained from a research that aimed to contribute for teaching and learning of instrumental learning. We present discussions related to the contributions, characteristics and obstacles inherent to the literature review research, and also define concepts related to scientific knowledge production (such as method and methodology). At last, in attesting that Bardin’s contributions remain effective for proposing rigorous pathways in the development of bibliographic research in human sciences, we present suggestions to young researchers beginning their work.
