Alcohol use by medical students has attracted attention due to its repercussions and the major impact on students’ daily practice. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of alcohol use by students at two medical schools in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and to stratify them according to the Audit scale. The cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted from March to November 2009 with first to fourth year medical students from the two schools, one private and one public (government). Based on the findings, 87.7% of the students were studying fulltime and 60% had consumed alcoholic beverages in the previous 12 months. In addition, some 25% of these students demonstrated the need for educational programs and interventions to prevent the harm resulting from the use of alcoholic beverages.
