This article is part of a research project that studies the Museum of Anthropology in Vale do Paraíba (MAV) as an educational institution. Here the investigation looks at the relationships between the residents of the city of Jacareí, SP, a museum located in this city and a public school which, for decades, has occupied the space that today houses the museum. Long before that, in the second half of the 19th century, the building had been originally built to be the home of a coffee grower in the area. Considering its changes over time, we see MAV as a place of memory, especially of school memory, since for almost a century, from 1886 through 1980, the building housed the School Colonel Carlos Porto. The direction we took was to analyze the immaterial dimension of school material culture beginning with the objects that have been preserved and the memories of former students, teachers and employees of the school, produced in the contact with this space and its artifacts. In our analysis, we understand that MAV has been seized by the city residents as a result of their own school remembrances, in spite of a tradition that linked the museum to the grandeur of the coffee cultivation and its barons.
