SILVA, Tatiane da. Sophistic Paideia: rhetoric in democratic citizen training. Educação e Filosofia [online]. 2016, vol.30, suppl., pp.191-212. ISSN 1982-596x. https://doi.org/10.14393/REVEDFIL.issn.0102-6801.v30nEspeciala2016-p191a212.
This paper aims to explain the importance of the advent of democracy and the ascension of rhetorical professors, the thinkers called sophists, for the expansion of the paideia notion in Classical Greece. The sophists’ questions open the path for the collapse of physis’ empire, natural order which ruled the structural norms that organized the society, and together with democracy which put on political scene the excluded citizens, they brought the logos tyranny, the mastery of word in the resolution of the public affairs. Therefore, it becomes possible replacing the aristocratic paideia which postulated the education of warrior and ambitious young man, for the Sophists’ paideia which taking the citizens become aware to the rhetoric’s value for the democratic life. Once the polis is made by human actions and decisions, the true education is the participation in political life.
