This article points out some results obtained with the research held about the historical process that allowed the creation of an establishment dedicated to the formation of teachers in the city of Ponte Nova - Minas Gerais, Mary Help of Christians Normal School, in 1896. The periodization chosen, inserts our object of study in the context of the First Republic (1889 - 1930), at which time, normal schools were understood as prime locations to the formation of teachers. The analysis of official written documents revealed some characteristics about the creation and the early years of the Normal School, its faculty, the school administration, people who have graduated there and even basis concerning to the enrollment rates, attendance and progression.
