This study analyzes the development of an academic debate about controversial contemporary scientific themes by students in the third year of high school. The debate was motivated by reading scientific divulgation texts. The organization of the debate occurred as a specific model that proposes previous activities, understood as conditions for the construction of arguments and senses. The audiovisual record of the debate was qualitatively analyzed according fundamental concepts of Informal Logic. The analysis revealed evidences of a variety of arguments conceived by students to defend their positions, contributions for the development of certain cognitive aspects, the importance of the genre "debate's" appropriation discursive and basic concepts related to argumentative capacity.
