ESPINOZA, Oscar. Privatization of higher education in Chile: consequences and lessons learned. Eccos Rev. Cient. [online]. 2017, n.44, pp.175-202. Epub 20-Jun-2019. ISSN 1983-9278. https://doi.org/10.5585/eccos.n44.8070.
The article discusses the effects generated by the privatization process of the Chilean tertiary system promoted by the Pinochet dictatorship since 1981. Based on primary and secondary sources, the growth of the public and private institutional platform, the undergraduate enrollment, the offer of undergraduate programs and the over supply of professionals are evaluated. In addition, what happened with the financing regime is analyzed. Evidence allows to conclude that privatization has had a harmful effect on society and the actors involved, given that the explosive growth experienced by the tertiary system, and manifested in a growing opening of careers, enrollment and graduation rates, has generated a totally deregulated private offer that does not match the needs of the country.
