It performs an analysis on the concept of challenge present in educational exams. Selected and examined one set of twenty-three articles scientific, indexed in two international databases (SciELO and Web of Science), published in the period from 1974 to 2017. As a result, it is perceived that an innovation is understood from four perspectives: as something positive beforehand, as synonymous with educational reform, as a change of curricular proposals and as a change of educational practices in a social group. It concludes that the concept of innovation is a wide network of meanings that are linked to the different epistemological and ideological conceptions about the educational process.
