This article analyzes changes in enrollment at compulsory education stage, from 1932 to 2003, by state, noting the magnitude of the recent decentralization process. We have collected enrollment historical data from the Anuários Estatísticos do Brasil (AEBs), published by the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE), and from Estatísticas do Século XX, a data collection from former agencies, Diretoria-Geral de Estatística and Instituto Nacional de Estatística. The findings indicate an association of the recent process of decentralization in education with the setting that the Brazilian federation took after the promulgation of the 1988 Constitution.
