This article aims at describing the oral transmission system and the contribution of the educational cognizance existing in the traditional Afro-Brazilian cultures. These cultures inherited an African knowledge and their form of transmission among generations via the orality maintains principles and values that are relevant to the establishment of a universal ethics. The encounter with these cultures, held in such a way that permits to recognize their historical relevance, makes it possible the overcoming of social crises, such as those triggered by prejudice and racial discrimination. The proposal of the Federal Law n. 10,639/2003, which makes mandatory the teaching of African and Afro-Brazilian history and culture in schools, allows for the rethink of the Afro-Brazilian cultural practices beyond their appearances, revealing the educational value contained in them.
